Français : Publiée à Madrid en 1640 par Juan Eusebio Nieremberg, la Diferencia entre lo temporal y eterno est l’un des traités ascétiques les plus lus à l’époque moderne. En 1705, les jésuites du Paraguay et leurs collaborateurs amérindiens en éditent une version en guarani richement illustrée par leurs propres presses, les premières de fabrication américaine. Cet imprimé lié à un contexte d’énonciation original a suscité diverses études iconographiques qui tendent à interpréter ses estampes à l’aune du texte-source castillan, sans renvoyer au texte-cible traduit. Grâce à une gravure réputée gratuite car représentant un âne et un jaguar absents du propos de l’auteur, cet article se propose de mobiliser les catégories jakobsoniennes de traduction interlinguale et intersémiotique afin d’analyser conjointement récits et images adaptés et d’éclairer la cohérence de leurs modalités d’élaboration, actualisation et réception.

English: Published in Madrid in 1640 by Juan Eusebio Nieremberg, the Diferencia entre lo temporal y eterno is one of the principal ascetical treatises of the modern period. In 1705, the Jesuits of Paraguay and their native collaborators issue a richly engraved Guaraní version of the book with their own printing press, the first one ever built in America. Bound to a highly specific situation of utterance, this edition inspired several iconographical studies that opt for a source text-centered approach, interpreting the etchings separately from the translated target text. Focusing on an illustration considered to be arbitrary for displaying a donkey and a jaguar unrelated to the author’s rationale, this article aims at using Jakobson’s concepts of interlingual and intersemiotic translation to analyze the adapted narratives and images as a whole, shedding light on the consistent way they were created, enacted and understood.
